Artist Statement

I was drawn into art by initially being captivated by metal working processes - I am quickly absorbed into the flow. I find the process peaceful, but full of strength; and the metal itself full of energy and life, especially as the art emerges.
My goal is for others to see the beauty that lies within metal, especially a piece of discarded steel. I do this by drawing from the metal's strength, texture, shape, and most importantly, the unique characteristics that have evolved throughout its life. These characteristics might be holes that had a previous unknown purpose, rusted out sections that create their own unique story, or the shape that was created for a prior purpose.
Each piece I create begins with selecting the piece of metal ... mostly by rummaging through salvage yards. As I select the metal, I envision what it could become and how I can transform it. Once I'm ready to start the transformation, I clean up the metal. During this process, I get to know the characteristics of that unique piece ... the holes, the dents and bends, the strength and flexibility, the texture, and definitely the weight. I envision what creation fits with those characteristics and then begin to sketch it out.
Most of my designs are inspired by objects in nature or shapes with an organic feel. I have a particular fondness for trees. They have many of the characteristics that appeal to me about metal ... strength with flexibility, texture, color, a sense of majestic peacefulness.
As I bring a design onto metal, I start with an idea but allow the metal to guide the final creation. Many times, the design evolves, completing when there is harmony between the unique aspects of the metal, the design that has come through, and the colors that accent and enhance the entire piece.
My work is evolving as I am discovering new possibilities with metal. I shift between welded designs and sculptures, incorporating multiple dimensions into designs that, at first thought, might not seem to fit. I'm experimenting with welding techniques to create varied textures with a sense of strength and stability. I'm also evolving the colors and painting techniques I use to create the finished design. I enjoy the constant challenge of new ideas and techniques that open up a whole new realm of art. |
